Pacemakers

A pacemaker is a small device that is implanted in the chest to help regulate an abnormal heart rhythm. Pacemakers are used to treat people who have a slow heart rate (bradycardia) or a heart rhythm that is irregular or chaotic.

How does a pacemaker work?

A pacemaker is made up of two parts: a pulse generator, which includes the battery and several electronic circuits, and wires called leads. The leads are placed inside the heart or on its surface and are attached to the pulse generator.

Once the pacemaker is implanted, the leads monitor your heart rate. If the pacemaker detects a slow heart rate, it sends out a small electrical impulse to the heart to make it beat faster.

Why do I need a pacemaker?

Pacemakers are used in patients who have:

  • A slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • An irregular or chaotic heart rhythm
  • A heart block, which is a condition where the electrical signals from the heart’s upper chambers to the lower chambers are blocked

How is a pacemaker implanted?

Pacemaker implant surgery is usually done while the patient is asleep. It is not open-heart surgery, but it does require a small incision in the chest. The procedure usually takes about one to two hours. You will need to stay in the hospital for at least one night after the device is implanted.

Once the ICD is implanted, the leads monitor your heart rate. If the ICD detects ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation, it sends out a controlled burst of impulses (called “overdrive” pacing). If that does not work, the ICD “shocks” the heart to restore a normal rhythm. Newer ICD devices can also work like a pacemaker if a slow heart rate (bradycardia) occurs.

What is life like after pacemaker implantation?

After pacemaker implantation, you will need to follow your doctor's instructions carefully. You will need to take care of the incision site and avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks. You will also need to have regular checkups with your doctor to make sure the pacemaker is working properly.
If you are considering pacemaker implantation, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of this treatment.
